Meet our suppliers: Matthew Algie

We’re often asked where we get our wonderful coffee, so here’s an introduction to Matthew Algie, which has been supplying us with their first-class beans for over a decade.

Matthew Algie sources green coffee beans from carefully-selected producers across the globe, and then expertly roasts them on site in Glasgow to ensure that each batch achieves its optimal flavour profile.

Our delicious coffee is the Fairtrade 'Pacha' blend, which originates from Honduras, Brazil, and Uganda. ‘A fine balance of fruit acidity in the finish, with initial notes of sweet vanilla and toasty cereal grains on the palate’. We believe there's no finer roast!

Sustainable sourcing is the top priority

The company launched the UK’s first Fairtrade espresso in 1997 and the world’s first triple-certified (Fairtrade, Organic and Rainforest Alliance) espresso in 2004. Today, 95% of the coffee they buy has at least one sustainable certification.

Working with producers in many different countries – primarily Brazil, Honduras, Peru, Ethiopia, Sumatra and Vietnam – Matthew Algie helps smallholder farmers achieve certifications so they can operate more sustainably and improve the overall quality of the coffee beans they produce.

Some producers have been supplying Matthew Algie with beans for more than 20 years, and the company makes regular visits to meet with individual farmers, cooperative leaders and exporters. This gives the producers confidence to invest in their operations and ensures Matthew Algie consistently sources the best quality coffee.

“Matthew Algie has had the pleasure of working closely with The Woodhouse since 2012. Serving a carefully selected, Fairtrade-certified blend from Honduras, Brazil and Tanzania, The Woodhouse has proven to be a perfect coffee partner. In the experienced hands of Chris and the team, coffee lovers can consistently enjoy the highest quality, espresso-based drinks.”

The majority of our team of baristas have undergone training at Matthew Algie's premises in Glasgow, and we’ll happily make your coffee any way you like - be that a simple espresso, a frothy cappuccino or a half-shot, almond milk, extra hot, caramel latte!

Enjoy our coffee at home

We’ve been selling the Pacha blend in the farm shop for several years, but appreciate not everyone wants a 1kg bag! So, good news, we now have the beans in our ‘zero waste’ section of the farm shop, meaning you can fill your own container and enjoy the Woodhouse experience at home 😊
